These ponies are the original draft-type Shetlands.  While the American Shetland is beautiful in it's own right, it in no way should be mistaken for the original Shetland pony.  Almost all Shetlands here in the US have been crossed with other breeds throughout the years.  Now they are a completely different breed from the original, true-type Shetland pony.  Most of our ponies are 40" - 42" tall with substance---ideal for use in many different applications.

All of the foals we sell have imported British blood in their pedigree.  We strive to produce Shetland Ponies of the same type that originally developed on the Shetland Islands.  This type of pony excels as a great kid's pony because they have the temperament and strength required.  We are proud of the ponies at Whippoorwill Farm, they are friendly, gentle, and trustworthy.

Pedigrees of our ponies include such greats as the ponies of Olney Farm, started in 1920--one of the few breeders that refused to cross its ponies with other breeds.  Many of our ponies are descendants of Eastland's Laurel, an imported son of the top performance and halter stallion, Lakeland Lightning.  Lightning was owned by Eastlands Stud in Langholm, Scotland.

After much contemplation, we have decided to no longer breed the Shetlands; 2008 will be the last year for foals born here.

We appreciate all the emails and calls from people throughout the nation wishing to preserve the original Shetland.  Unfortunately, we cannot give ponies away to help support this cause.  We still have brood mares, fillies and geldings available for sale.  Please email or call for a current list of ponies for sale.

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR PONIES, HORSES, DONKEYS AND MULES:

1.  My life is likely to last 20 or more years.  Any separation from you will be painful for me.  Remember that before you take me home.

2.  Give me time to understand what you want from me.

3.  Place your trust in me.  It is crucial to my well being.  I need your affection.

4.  Don't be angry with me for long.  Don't lock me up as punishment.  You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends.  I have only you.

5.  Talk to me sometimes.  Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when it is speaking to me.

6.  Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7.  Remember before you hit me that I am powerful enough to hurt you, but choose not to.

8.  Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me.  Perhaps I have a problem that you are not yet aware of.

9.  Take care of me when I am old.  You too will be old one day.

10.  Go with me on the last journey.  Never say "I cannot bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence".  Everything is easier for me if you are there with me.  Remember that I love you.
