REGENERATIVE FARMING
HEALTHY SOIL IS HEALTHY FOOD
On our 8 acres of land on Martha's Vineyard, we farm based on the principles of regenerative agriculture, which - simply put - is farming like our ancestors used to before the pre-industrial era.
Regenerative farming preserves the soil and prevents carbon from escaping into the atmosphere. At Whippoorwill Farm, we believe that small-scale farming results in better soil, healthier crops, healthier food for you and a healthier planet for humankind. You can taste the difference!
Regenerative farming conserves and restores the organic matter in the soil by protecting the habitats of micro and macro-organisms that have been destroyed by big tilling machinery and chemical fertilizers. By reducing the soil disturbance we keep living roots in the soil year round. Rather than tilling, we cover the soil with a protective layer of mulch or decaying organic matter, bring in animals to graze as part of the crop rotation and plant a wide variety of crops.
WHAT IS REGENERATIVE FARMING?
HEALTHIER PLANET
Regenerative farming improves the rate at which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere and converted to plant material and soil organic matter. In addition to offsetting emissions, it also restores degraded soils, enhances crop production, and reduces pollution by minimizing erosion and nutrient runoff, purifying surface and groundwater, and increasing microbial activity and soil biodiversity.
By supporting small-scaled, regenerative agriculture, you help farmers work toward a more sustainable future, thriving communities and healthy ecosystems to regenerate our living world!
